Hero modules are usually the heaviest asset on a product detail page. By resizing to a 5:4 ratio, preloading the first image, and serving WebP we trimmed 1.8MB while improving clarity.

The old layout forced browsers to download 3.9MB of imagery. We swapped to a single hero at 1600×1280, used srcset for responsive variants, and lazy loaded the gallery thumbnails.

  • PDP conversion rate moved from 4.6% to 4.92% (+7%)
  • Largest Contentful Paint dropped from 3.4s to 2.2s on 4G
  • Time on page increased 18% for new visitors

When you roll this out, prioritize product lines with the highest mobile revenue share. They usually benefit the most from faster hero delivery.

We trimmed 1.8MB from PDP hero modules, lifted conversion 7%, and kept Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds.
